How to Play Kubb – A Step-by-Step Guide
Set‑Up
- Arrange a rectangular pitch approx. 8 m by 5 m, marking corners with stakes.
- Position five kubbs evenly across each baseline and place the King in the centre.
Teams
- Two teams play, each with 1 to 6 players. Informal games allow flexible team sizes.
- To decide who starts, one player from each team throws a baton underarm; whoever lands closest to the King (without knocking it over) goes first.
Gameplay
- Teams alternate turns. Players must throw batons underarm, end‑over‑end, with no sideways (“helicopter”) throws allowed.
- In the opening turn, four batons are thrown; subsequently, each turn includes six batons.
- Fallen kubbs (called “field kubbs”) are then thrown onto the opponent’s half and set upright where they land.
- Next, the opposing team must topple all field kubbs before targeting baseline kubbs. If they fail, the opposing team may throw from a new baseline created by the nearest standing field kubb to the centre.
Winning
- Once one team has knocked down all kubbs on the opposing baseline and field, they may attempt to topple the King—only from behind their baseline.
- Successfully knocking down the King wins the game. However, toppling the King prematurely (while any kubbs remain) results in an immediate loss.
