Whether you’re a seasoned player or learning for the first time, it’s a simple game to pick up and play.

How to Play Kubb – A Step-by-Step Guide

Set‑Up

  • Arrange a rectangular pitch approx. 8 m by 5 m, marking corners with stakes.
  • Position five kubbs evenly across each baseline and place the King in the centre.

Teams

  • Two teams play, each with 1 to 6 players. Informal games allow flexible team sizes.
  • To decide who starts, one player from each team throws a baton underarm; whoever lands closest to the King (without knocking it over) goes first.

Gameplay

  1. Teams alternate turns. Players must throw batons underarm, end‑over‑end, with no sideways (“helicopter”) throws allowed.
  2. In the opening turn, four batons are thrown; subsequently, each turn includes six batons.
  3. Fallen kubbs (called “field kubbs”) are then thrown onto the opponent’s half and set upright where they land.
  4. Next, the opposing team must topple all field kubbs before targeting baseline kubbs. If they fail, the opposing team may throw from a new baseline created by the nearest standing field kubb to the centre.

Winning

  • Once one team has knocked down all kubbs on the opposing baseline and field, they may attempt to topple the King—only from behind their baseline.
  • Successfully knocking down the King wins the game. However, toppling the King prematurely (while any kubbs remain) results in an immediate loss.
